Vaudeville Style in Austin: Pictures
Posted on 30. Sep, 2009 by Corey Hartford in Media, Pictures and Snapshots
August is a great month in Texas for two reasons. First, the pool at my childhood home, which is predominately covered by large trees and thus confined to bone-rattling temperatures throughout most of the year, becomes an enjoyable and temperate 75 degrees (with credit bestowed upon Houston’s kind offering of endless 104 degree days). Secondly, August lays claim to the month of my entrance into this big and beautiful world – twenty-six memory-filled years ago.
In celebration of my first hello to the globe, the Mrs. and I packed up the Mom-mobile and headed to the great land of Austin, Texas – home of our alma mater, the University of Texas, and home to all things fun, delicious, and decadent.
During our trek to the hill country, we made special efforts to pre-order tickets for a much-acclaimed Austin hotspot – Esther’s Follies. Located smack in the middle of Sixth Street (aka, “I can’t believe there can be this many bars/such cheap drinks/and such amazing people-watching in one place”), Esther’s Follies provides an old-skool Vaudeville vibe intertwined with current-day politics and going-ons. Skits, songs, short skirts and magic show – at $20 a head some may edge away from the chance to go, but I assure you, it is twenty dollars very well spent. I’ve seen similar vaudeville shows in Palm Springs advertised for upwards of $60 a pop.
